Empirically, I have rarely if ever gotten more than two items in one session. After two, it seems like I can keep breaking rocks to my heart's content, but won't get any more until I go away for a while.

But that's just my observation.

I'd like it if I didn't have to do so much work to make anything. I'd like to be able to just push a button that says "fill order" and have the game take it from there -- harvesting the resources, processing them at the mill, and delivering the finished goods to the boats or whatever.

It's sloppy programming. Nondeterministic behavior is a hallmark symptom of code written by rank amateurs.

I accumulated 25 doubloons toward whatever is next in the third slot. Some of those were before the event, but only a few. I got to level 5 about 3 or 4 days ago.

Why must everyone in the northern hemisphere always put snow in things at this time of year? Makers of these games must forget that it summer here in the southern hemisphere. I'll be more direct: I think playing for xp is usually a bad idea. It leaves you short on coins, short on mills, and it gets you to the end of the game (i.e. Max level) all that much sooner, where you'll then be stuck.
