It isn't necessary to get too wrapped up in the literal specifics. For people who have played Portal, the mention or presence of any cake in any context (especially within a game) is enough to warrant saying "The cake is a lie" in a vaguely suspicious way, as if conspiracies lived around every corner. The meme is so pivotal to the Portal storyline that we just can't help ourselves.

Still, I can't look at a picture of a cake without thinking that someone is trying to pull a fast one on me.
